The Gauchos also Fly

In Laborde, Córdoba, Argentina, the locals have embraced a striking revelation: they are convinced that they host “the most Argentine festival of all.” At this event, now more than half a century old, malambo dancers — performers of a traditional dance — face off to become champion. As with many things in the southernmost nation in the world, the contest is both tyrannical and mysterious: the champion attains glory and, at the same time, retirement, because an almost sacred pact prevents him from ever competing again.
